Although League cricket has finished, cricket at Long Ditton continues until the end of the month. It was a mixed weekend, with a good win on Saturday in a friendly against Woodmansterne and a loss in the final Thameside League game against Worcester Park. Batting first on Saturday, Long Ditton posted 215 for 3, with Paul Sweeney carrying his bat making over 50, captain Tom Bennett scored 40 and James Chapple scored 70. The declaration was spot on, meaning that Woodmansterne did have a chance, but would have to play well to get it. They didn’t reckon on Tom “Wing Commander” Ormerod, on taking yet another 5 wickets however ans were a long way adrift on Saturday when James Chapple took the final wicket. Woodmansterne’s last man left the ball, but looked back in horror when the ball turned a long way to hit the top of the stumps, sending the bails flying.
On Sunday, a rather lethargic Long Ditton took to the field, and it then started to rain, persistent but not quite enough to take the players off. Worcester Park lost an early wicket, but soon raced to 80 for 1 off 14 overs. Long Ditton then got themselves back in the game, with Adam Hunt and Tom Bennett bowling well. However, Long Ditton just could not prise out the last man and Worcester Park finished on 190 for 9 off their 45 overs. In reply, Tom Bennett made another 40, but once he was out, Long Ditton were always behind the run rate and were all out for 130.
