Many thanks to all of you who came down to the club on Saturday, 27th March. It was great to see so many young players practising after such a long winter. The Surrey players who came down and spent some time coaching were extremely impressed with everyone. They particularly commented on how enthusiastic everyone was, how much everyone seemed to enjoy being down the club and how knowledgeable the  juniors were about cricket and Surrey cricketers. For the second year running, a junior player caught the eye of the Surrey staff and has now been invited to go down to the cricket school at Surrey for District trials, which is great news for the club.

Whilst most most of the junior members were out practising in the nets, another young member was expertly painting the rest of the club we didn’t have time last year. Charlotte Downey spent the whole morning helping John Parkins paint the walls behind the bar. Thanks Charlotte and everyone who came down!

Don’t forget to come down the club tomorrow. I’ve been told by Surrey Cricket that we will have a couple of players from Surrey from 11am. They will be signing autographs, junior players can have their photo taken etc and hopefully they’ll do a bit of coaching as well. I won’t know who the players are until they arrive.

This is part of the NatWest ECB Cricket Force weekend, which Long Ditton is signed up to. You will be able to collect your free Cricket Force T-shirt tomorrow. These will be given out on a first come, first served basis.

The usual suspects put up the nets on Saturday, in steady drizzle. Hopefully this will be the last season of these nets, before they are totally replaced. Mark had a good meeting with Surrey in Guildford at their Cricket Centre last week and is very hopeful of getting a large grant from them. His computer will be whirring away in the next few weeks completing the application and believe you me, it makes a tax form look simple!

The club helped Surrey Cricket take part in a Sport Relief Challenge on Saturday 20th March, when Surrey Cricket aimed to visit all 45 Focus Clubs in a 24 hour period. The Club Secretary was filmed handing over a Long Ditton baggy cap to Surrey Cricket TV presenter Mark Church, before the Surrey Cricket van disappeared in a cloud of dust to their next venue. To see the first part of Surrey’s challenge, click on the link below. It may take a while to load – our starring role is about three quarters of the way through.

The membership forms for the Under 8’s and 9’s will be sent out this weekend, or print out the membership form from the web-site. For those of you who were with us last year, please don’t worry – a place is guaranteed for your junior player, unless you tell us differently. Mark, Suzi, and Paula will be running similar sessions to last year – from 10.30am to midday on Sundays from the end of April until the school holidays. Mark will also try and arrange some games against local teams, such as Chessington last year, to give the Under 8’s and 9’s real match experience. We do have some spaces for players aged 6 and above, so if you know anyone who would like to join, please point them in our direction!
