Seniors’ weekend round-up 23 & 24 June

All the senior teams lost their games on Saturday and Sunday. The First XI lost against away at Battersea Ironsides, whilst the Second XI lost at home, again against Battersea Ironsides. On Sunday, the First XI lost away at Cobham Avorians. The effects of the Salsa Night on Saturday evening definitely had an effect on performances! There was no game at the club, as the heavy overnight rain had made the wicket unplayable – not often we say that at LDCC. Click on the Play Cricket link on the right to see all the scorecards.

Seniors’ weekend round up 16 & 17 June

The First XI gained a winning draw against Merstham on Saturday, in a low scoring game, with a damp wicket and a long (by LDCC standards) outfield. All the rain has made the grass grow extremely quickly and has been difficult to cut. Merstham hung on, and despite a huge LBW shout by all those around the bat, the First XI just could not get that final wicket.

The Second XI game away at Chaldon MO was abandoned at 9.30am on Saturday morning, which was not that surprising to those who played there last year.

On Sunday, the First XI had a good win against Godalming. Having lost the toss, LDCC took to the field, and thought a lot of runs would be scored on a hard track (Godalming have covers). However, the bowling was tight and LDCC bowled them out for 102. After tea, the First XI got off to a shaky start and were soon 40 – 4, but Tom Bennett again played a captains innings, making an ubeaten half century, to steer Long Ditton home.

At home, the Sunday Seconds were beaten in a tense game against Vishwa. Click on the Play-Cricket Link for the scorecards.

U11’s league match – Away at Thames Ditton, Sunday 10th June 2012

For once the weather was kind to us. Ollie Leaning captained the U11’s for the first time and won the toss, electing to field first.  He also opened the bowling with Ben Hughes, but it was not until the 7th over that Long Ditton managed to take 2 wickets off Felix Williams’ second over. The first wicket was a run out flicked onto the stumps by Felix W and the second was a catch at mid-off by Freddie.  The only other wicket taken in this innings was bowled and caught by Imogen with the first ball of the 19th over. Thames Ditton scored 119 runs for 3 wickets (which included 28 extras) off 20 overs.
Felix and Imogen led the batting charge, defending their wickets well against some strong Thames Ditton bowlers.  Felix was caught on 20 runs in the 10th over having notched up a partnership with Imogen of 36. Imogen went on to a good partnership with Freddie and had to retire on 30 not out. Freddie batted solidly, hitting three 4’s and scoring 19 not out, having faced just 19 balls – so a great run rate.  On Imogen’s retirement, Leo pushed some nice ones until he was bowled out on 7 in the final over. The Captain, Ollie, stepped up to the crease to face 2 balls, scoring 1 not out. Long Ditton scored 101 (with 24 extras) for 2 wickets off 20 overs.
So whilst it was a loss, it was great to see the U11’s protecting their wickets so well and there was some great fielding by the team including strong wicket keeping from Leo and excellent fielding by Oliver Taylor.

Seniors’ weekend round up, 9 & 10 June

In the double header on Saturday, the Saturday First XI lost against Haslemere, whilst the 2nd XI gained a win against Haslemere, at home, by 2 runs in a dramatic match. Tom Ormerod was the man of the match, finishing 66 not out, on a slow pitch with an even slower outfield. A direct hit from Dave Oldham ensured a run-out as Haslemere chased what may have been thought was a relatively easy total. Oldham wrapped the game up with just two balls to go, taking a catch off the bowling of Tom Rogers.

On Sunday, the First XI lost by 2 wickets in the Thameside League against Guildford City, whilst the Second XI lost against Putney & Turnham Green Polytechnic. Tommy Daniels, having already played in the morning with the Under 14s, batted well, to reach his top senior score of 27.

Weekend round up, Friday 1st June to Mon 4th June

On Friday, the Seniors lost against a strong  Thames Ditton side, at home, in the Fuller’s League Twenty20 League (Highlight of the evening was Mark Lambert winning the meat raffle in the British Legion, much to Frank Boxall’s annoyance). On Saturday, the First XI lost against Warlingham, whilst the Second XI had a losing draw away at Worplesdon. Having won the toss, Long Ditton asked Worplesdon to bat and on a small ground, did well to keep them under 200. The Club Secretary would like it noted that due to traffic problems, he was not on the field for the first over and the only bye was against the stand in wicket-keeper (who shall remain nameless but the first name begins with Paul and last name ends in Mock. Again, the Seconds had a very nervy start batting and quickly were reduced to 15 – 5. Carel and Jay mounted a superb fightback, with sixes being launched to the other side of the ground. Tom Rogers and Dan Johnstone had to block out three overs to gain the losing draw, which they did admirably, to gain a rare losing draw for Long Ditton, in a game which Worplesdon probably thought they has sown up.

Both games on Sunday were abandoned after around an hour’s play, with Nick Turnbull away at Thames Ditton and Dave Oldham at home against Burgh Heath, looking well set for their 50s.

On Bank Holiday Monday, Long Ditton Seniors lost in the second round of the League Cup, away at Haslemere.
